Universal Life Insurance in Sacramento
Universal life gives you permanent coverage with payments you can adjust. That flexibility only helps if the policy is funded right. We start by finding out what the coverage has to do, then build a plan that holds up when rates and life change.

How universal life works and who it suits
This is a permanent policy. As long as it stays in force, it pays the people you name as beneficiaries when you die. Each payment gets split. One share goes to the cost of insurance and fees. The other goes into cash value that the insurer credits with interest. You can change what you pay from year to year, within limits written into the contract.
Here is the catch most people never hear. The cost of insurance goes up as you age. If the cash value can't keep up, the policy can lapse. That is why we look at what you need the coverage for before we pick a design. A policy meant to last to age 100 is set up very differently from one meant to fund a business buyout.
It is often the right call for people who need coverage past the length of a term policy but want more room on payments than whole life allows. If a short need is all you have, we will tell you term life may cost far less.
What you get when we set up a policy
- We start with what you need
- We find out who relies on you, which debts or plans the payout should handle and how many years the need runs. Those answers set the coverage amount and the policy type.
- Picking the universal life design that fits
- Guaranteed universal life holds a fixed death benefit and builds little cash value. Current-assumption and indexed versions grow more cash value but come with more risk. We lay out each one simply and pair it with your goal.
- Every illustration gone over with you
- Each quote includes an illustration. We put the guaranteed figures beside the projected ones so you can see how the policy holds up if the insurer's rates turn out lower.
- A deliberate death benefit choice
- A level benefit holds costs down. An increasing benefit adds the cash value on top of the payout. We go over which one serves your beneficiary better.
- Support during underwriting
- We prepare you for the health questions and any exam, then stay in touch with the carrier until they make a decision.
Signs universal life deserves a look
Your term policy is ending
Your need hasn't ended, but the coverage is about to. Converting or replacing it with universal life can keep you covered for life.
Your annual statement shows a shrinking balance
If cash value drops year after year on an older policy, the cost of insurance may be eating it. That is a warning to act before a lapse notice shows up.
You got a premium increase letter
Many universal life policies sold years ago assumed higher interest rates. We review the policy and show you the choices, from paying more to lowering the benefit.
Your income goes up and down
Business owners and people paid on commission can put extra in after a big quarter and send just the minimum when cash is tight.
You need money left for someone specific
Leaving funds to a child with special needs, covering estate costs, or funding a partner buyout all call for coverage that lasts.
What happens once you pick up the phone
- 1
Your first call
Start by telling us what the coverage needs to do. We ask about health, budget and timeline. Nobody expects you to decide anything on that call.
- 2
Finding the real need
We run the numbers on how much coverage and for how long. Sometimes that points to universal life. Sometimes it points to whole life or term life, and we say so.
- 3
Comparing carriers
We gather quotes and illustrations, then lay them side by side. You see guaranteed values, projected values and the payment needed to keep the policy alive to the age you pick.
- 4
Application and underwriting
We fill out the application with you and schedule any exam. Underwriting can take a few weeks. We keep you posted on where it stands.
- 5
Delivery and yearly check
When the policy arrives, we go over it with you during the free-look window. After that, we review your annual statement so you catch problems early.

What moves the cost of universal life
No two universal life quotes are the same, because the policy is built around your age, health and goals. The biggest choice is how much you want guaranteed. We show you how each factor changes the payment before you commit.
- Your age and health at application
- Insurers charge the least for coverage that starts early in life and in good health. Each year you wait nudges the cost up. Tobacco use and some medical history put you in a higher rate class.
- Coverage amount and length
- A larger death benefit costs more. So does a guarantee that runs to age 100 or later instead of age 85.
- Guaranteed versus flexible design
- Guaranteed universal life usually costs less for pure lifelong coverage. Designs built for cash value growth ask for higher payments early.
- How you fund it
- Paying more in the early years can lower or even stop later payments. Paying the minimum can leave the policy short later on.
Universal life questions we hear
Something not covered here? (916) 347-3948
What separates universal life from whole life?
Whole life locks in a premium that never moves, and the insurer guarantees how the cash value grows. Universal life lets you change how much you pay, and in some cases the death benefit too. Because of that freedom, the policy needs watching. Whole life takes less attention from you but has a higher starting cost.
Is it possible for universal life coverage to lapse?
It is. When the cash value is used up and your payments fall short of the cost of insurance, coverage stops. A guaranteed universal life design, or a no-lapse guarantee rider, keeps that from happening as long as you pay the required amount. We tell you that amount up front.
My insurer sent a letter asking for higher payments on an old policy. Now what?
Keep the policy active while you sort it out. Send us the letter and your most recent statement, or read them to us over the phone. We review the cash value, today's charges and your current health, then walk you through the choices: putting in more, reducing the benefit, or replacing the policy when that is really the better move.
Can I get at the policy's money during my lifetime?
After enough cash value builds up, the insurer allows withdrawals or loans against it. Loans charge interest, and whatever is still owed is subtracted from the payout to your beneficiary. Heavy borrowing is a leading reason these policies end too soon. If you plan to use the money, we work the loans into the numbers before you sign anything.
Will I have to take a medical exam?
For bigger policies, usually yes. Some carriers use a shorter health review for smaller amounts. Before you apply, we let you know what each carrier will require.
